JADEITE

Jade

Jadeite jade occurs in a range of colours including green, white, red, orange, black, blue, yellow, violet and the popular lavender. The best-known colour is the emerald green jadeite from Myanmar;coloured by chromium and known as imperial jade, the translucent gemstone has been supplied to Chinese carvers since the 16th century. Jadeite has also been fashioned by the ancient civilisations of South and Central America. Jadeite is usually found as river boulders. The boulders have a thick skin or ‘rind’ hiding the gemstone within. Buyers purchase the boulders, without seeing the colour of the gemstone which is hidden within, and surrounded by a thick weathered surface or ‘skin’ (occasionally a small ‘window’ is cut into the boulder).
